With the rapid scaling of intermittent renewable energy, the global demand for long duration energy storage is increasing substantially. As countries worldwide increasingly implement aggressive renewable energy goals, it will be necessary to provide a reliable energy supply along with a firm capacity for grid-level energy storage to meet their intended targets.

There is currently a development shift among major automakers towards the development of battery electric vehicles. This market is presently dominated by lithium-ion batteries, with an on-going push to make the batteries safer, lighter, and longer-lasting. Ongoing development in alternative batteries, such as metal-air and nickel metal hydride, aim to meet or exceed energy densities of lithium-ion and expand operational ranges with earth-abundant materials.
